The Tilden School within the Oakland School District,
is a school for communicably handicapped children.
Many classes are for children with Autism.

In addition to modeling the teaching of Art to children
in Kindergarten and First Grade, I conducted professional development trainings. A sample is included here.

The sample below summarizes suggestions for some lesson modifications to meet the needs of the Kindergarten classes for Children with Autism.

November Professional Development at Tilden
Printing with Recyclables : Set-Up and Procedure

Suggestions for Succcess:

1. Have all students use the same kind of tool at one time - one each. There is one color per palette; give only one color at a time. Give the children a fresh sheet of paper for each tool used.

2. Give children test strips to explore how the tool works best. Students can explore for a few minutes if interested.

3. Printing tools and stamps move with their stamp pads or palette. Do this through trading.

4. Guide the trading - “You can switch the purple pad and its
triangle stamp with Ahmed’s orange pad and rectangle stamp.”Help students to do this.

5. Use visuals to show steps for each printing technique.

Depending upon the student’s readiness, you might include
2 color mixing or have them try the roller and ink plate.
